the second quote isn't his. you don't need to know what the rock looked like back then. you measure what's in it now: uranium turns into lead at a steady rate, so the lead that has built up tells you how long it's been. that's why he tested his method on a granite already dated to about a billion years by a different method, and his number matched. ❤️
